Once a small fishing village on the West Algarve Coast, Carvoeiro manages to retain some of its fishing village character certainly. Fishing boats still dot the beach bay here at one of the prettiest small resorts on the Algarve. Ideal for quieter family holidays on the Algarve, Carvoeiro offers a choice of sublime Algarve beaches in its surrounds. The distinctive windward West Algarve coast with its dramatic rock formations reaches peak effect at Algar Seco near Carvoeiro.
Luxury Carvoeiro villas and holiday apartments abound. Algarve golf is situated nearby, and for walkers wanting to explore the stunnning Algarve coast in this area around Algar Seco will do well to choose Carvoeiro as a base. It's a beautiful Algarve village come town, crammed with whitewashed low rise houses and tasteful Algarve accommodation.
Pretty Carvoeiro, one time quiet Algarve fishing village, is now a bustling holiday hotspot. You can see why, with its stunning little sheltered beach bay, Praia do Carvoeiro, and a choice of stunning Algarve West beaches nearby, including those around some of the most dramatic rock formations on the West Algarve coast at Algar Seco.
Other strings to Carvoeiro's bow include its chic choice of restaurants, cafes, bars and tasteful holiday shops. Not forgetting the excellent choice of Algarve golf courses in the area, plus diving is popular off this mix of cliffs and beach bay stretch of Algarve coast. Take a boat trip why not around the rocks of Algar Seco for the best views. Carvoeiro sits just down on the coast from Largoa, and is busy all year round, but particularly in peak season, so book accommodation well in advance.
Coastal walking is certainly on the menu around Carvoeiro, both around the town where either side of Praia do Carvoeiro the cliffs rise up. Trudge up both sides of the bay for spectacular views of the cliff coast towards Portimao and Lagos. Plenty of superb walking around Algar Seco situated just 1km east of Carvoeiro.

The choice of pretty Algarve beach coves and numerous hidden beaches around Carvoeiro pull in the visitors. Some beaches like Albandeira Beach just to the east of Carvoeiro disappear almost completely at high tide. Sit in the little restaurant come cafe on Albandeira beach and watch the waves crashing against the rocky shore - magic! Top of the Carvoeiro beach chart is Marinha Beach also just to the east (steps down to this one). Surfers should head a little to the west to Pintadinho beach. Excellent sublime swim stops include Praia de Centianes.
Here at Algar Seco just to the East of Carvoeiro you can really see the contrast between the Western barlavento windward Algarve coast and the Eastern Sotavento leeward Algarve Coast. Algar Seco's rock formations, a result of the West Algarve coast land rises where a collision of the Eurasian and African continental plates is literally pushing the land upwards. It's the reason for the distinctive steep sandstone cliffs and broken off dramatic rock formations on the West Algarve coast, as compared to the gentle estuaries and Ilha beaches around Faro and Tavira on the East Algarve Coast.
A tour of the Algar Seco rock formations is not to be missed. Around the lighthouse a choice of walking trails open up to sharp cliff drops and pyramid shaped rocks jutting up out of the sea. It's an unforgettable sight, and unique to the West Algarve coast. Explore the many rock pools and try some snorkelling, which as you can imagine is superb around Algar Seco.

To take boat trips along the coast around Algar Seco (some of the boats are themed and look more like old pirate ships - great fun for the kids!), numerous fisherman's boats leave from Carvoeiro, Benagil Beach and indeed from Portimao.
Carvoeiro is somewhat of a West Algarve Golf holiday hotspot. You've a choice of golf courses in the immediate Carvoeiro area, then more beyond around Portimao.
