Elegant Estoril sits in the heart of the Lisbon region increasingly coming to be known as the Portuguese Riviera. Attractive beaches mingle with glamour casinos and historic palaces to great effect, pulling in both the tourist and local Lisboans.
During World War II Estoril was a hub for spies in 'neutral' Portugal, and did you know - Ian Fleming based his book Casino Royale on Estoril and the area. His point of study was the Yugoslav spy Dusko Popov, a double agent providing considerable inspiration for the creation of the James Bond character. Ian Fleming, worked in navel intelligence during the Second World War and was assigned to trail Popov. Today Estoril is still the land of casinos, with a choice of golf courses in the area, and a focus on low key leisure.
Quieter Estoril, these days, tends to revolve a little around its bustling casino which offers a host of shows, a huge restaurant and plenty of games choice. Along with other locations on the Estoril coast, Estoril was once the location of choice for royalty and nobility - there are a number of palaces in the area.
Estoril's beach - Tamariz, sits at the bottom of the casino's main avenue. Calm quiet waters are here, and indeed across the Estoril coast in contrast to the Guincho coast further north which gets the Atlantic full on.
Estoril spells relaxation these days, with its dotted plam tree adorned streets, and attracts both families and older visitors. If you like watching professional racing a la motorbikes, go-karts and car racing then head for Estoril's huge Autodromo (weblink right).
Tamariz beach, Estoril's own beach, is surrounded by a choice of Estoril hotels. This Estoril coast beach also benefits from excellent facilities including cafes, beach bars, showers and a character ocean swimming pool.
Estoril is one of Portugal's main golf holiday bases. The Portuguese Open Championships have been held here numerous times. There's a choice of Estoril golf courses, from the most well known Clube de Golf do Estoril (weblink right), to the golf practice arena of Estoril-Sol. In all the Estoril and Sintra Golf coast has 9 golf courses, all easily accessible from nearby Lisbon Airport!
