Cascais is one of the central hubs on the Estoril coast, situated at the end of the Lisbon/Cascais mainline rail route which gives easy fast access into Lisbon city centre. It's a friendly base Cascais, with a self contained work-a-day feel - it feels like a small town. Cascais Tourist Information Centre is on Rua Visconde da Luz 14, Cascais. Tel: 214 868204. Open from 9am to 7pm Mondays to Saturdays from Sept to June and until 8pm from July to August. Sundays open from 10am to 6pm. It's an excellent tourist info centre this one, with good maps both for the Estoril coast area and for Lisbon city centre.
Great urban beaches combine here with a choice of Cascais cultural centres and museums. Fishing is still strong here, and Cascais is a centre for sailing, with regattas and sailing competitions held here. Cascais's modern marina gives it an edge, as does its superb choice of shops, its historic fort and its pleasant pedestrianised streets, not to mention the local golf.
The best of the beach choice at Cascais is Praia do Guincho where the surfers and windsurfers tend to head. Cascais' other two beach bays include Praia da Ribeira. Cascais offers a selection of museums and cultural centres, which give it an edge. Its close ties with fishing and sailing are reflected on at the Sea Museum on Rua Julio Pereira de Mello (tel. 00351 214 82 54 00. Open from 10am to 5pm every day except Mondays and public holidays). Treasures salvaged from wrecks off the Estoril Coast and other fishing artefacts are on display here.
See too the Cascais Town Museum on Av.Rei Humberto II de Italia, Parque Marechal Carmona, Cascais. Tel. -- 351 214 82 54 07. Open 10am to 5pm daily expect Mon/public holidays. This museum sits in the Condes de Castro Guimaraes Palace and contains prehistoric archaeological finds and various manuscripts dating from 1505.
Jewel in the crown at Cascais is the Cascais Culturual Centre also on Av.Rei Humberto II. It sits within a resored convent and has a mix of exhibitions, but with a focus on regional folk music which you can listen to here.
