Lisbon Estoril Coast Tourism Guide - West Lisbon Centre

Just to the west of the central Baixa area sits Cais do Sodre and the chic Chiado district where you'll find some rather smart restaurants and cafes and the Museu do Chiado - Lisbon's hotspot for contemporary art. The Lisbon metro point at Cais do Sodre links into the main Lisbon rail route west stopping at hotspots like Belem, then on to Cascais on the coast. The Cais do Sodre area down on the waterfront is renowned for its great markets - Mercado da Ribeira (weblink right) is Lisbon's main market and is located here. There's also a good scattering of restaurants, bars and cafes in the area.

Moving Towards West Lisbon - Cais do Sodre, Chiado & the Alcantara Docks

Another of Lisbon's selection of hills is here - the hillside Bica district served by the Elevador da Bica - don't miss the views from Miradouro de Santa Catarina. Back on the waterfront, the Cais do Sodre area is the main point for Lisbon ferries across the Tejo. For tourist ferry boat trips up the River Tejo see the Transtejo weblink right for details.

For contemporary art at its best in Lisbon don't miss the Museu do Chiado on Rua Serpa Pinto 4, Lisbon. Tel: 213 432 148. Open Tuesdays to Sundasy from 10am to 6pm. It's free on Sundays from 10am to 2pm! Contemporary art exhibitions change regularly here (see Museu do Chiado weblink right for current exhibition details). On-site is a delightful courtyard cafe. Note the selection of Lisbon scenes in watercolour by Carlos Botelho, and this contemporary art gallery has regular early Portugese Modernism displays.

Moving further West on the Lisbon waterfront towards historic Belem, sits the newly revitalised Alcantara docks. Alcantara has fast become an area of Lisbon renowned for its buzzing nightlife. Much effort is also underway to further rejuvenate the area - the French architect Jean Nouve has been hard at work here. Well worth a look inside the Dom Fernando II e Gloria frigate - a ship dting from 1843, and now a museum focusing on maritime history. Tel: 213 620 10, open from Tuesdays to Sundays 10am to 5pm. Come nighttime, the sleection of clubs and bars down here attract a rather select crowd.

Other sights in the area, set to boom more as the area rejuvenates is the marina and the Museu do Centro Cientifico e Cultural de Macua on Rua da Junqueira. This museum focuses on Portuguese trade history and its links with both its colonies and the Orient.
