Alcochete sits at the heaert of the south bank Tejo estuary and has good bus services into central Lisbon (see TST weblink right for routes and timetables). Alcochete's name is taken from the Arabic for kiln - the area apparently had quite a few kilns back then.
Alcochete, like Sintra, has in the past been a popular haunt for royalty, coming here to relax and holiday. Today it's served by a good choice of local Lisbon Golf courses. Bullfighting also has a history here, and bulls are still let loose in the streets of Alcochete during the Barrete Verde and Salinas Feasts.
The pretty rural town of Alcochete sits on the south bank of the Tejo to the north of the Setubal Peninsula.
If you're looking for a quieter holiday base with good access to estuary birdwatching and walking tours, a good selection of Lisbon Golf courses and easy access into Lisbon (by bus is best from Alcochete) then this south of the Tejo location makes a good base.
You're close to the central Ribatejo up here in Alcochete and the influences are clear. Bullfighting is still popular here, and bulls are a key part of this Portuguese festival town.
The Alcochete area, along with the estuary, is famous for its salt pans. The coast here bustles with boat trips too. Historic monuments in the town include the Parish church and Church of Misericordia. Local Lisbon golf courses include Botado Golf (Atlantic) - a 9 hole golf course next to Praia da Consolacao, Golden Eagle Golf near Rio Maoir and Praia D'El Rey Golf Course rated as one of the best golf courses in Europe. Check the Lisbon Golf guide on this website for details.
