Lisbon Estoril Coast Tourism Guide - Sesimbra
Sesimbra on the southern coast of the Peninsula is another mecca weekend retreat for Lisboans heading for the beaches, scuba diving and trips out to Cabo Espichel down here. Sesimbra too is renowned for its fish restaurants which line the beaches - fishing still thrives in this onetime small fishing village. Sesimbra's Moorish castle sits above the town, and up here are splendid coastal views.
Sesimbra is nicely sheltered by the backed on Serra da Arrabida, and makes a good outdoor activity holiday base, with opportunities for watersports including scuba diving, local walking in the Arrabida Natural Park, boat trips and more. Sesimbra is a particular Portuguese centre for diving and scuba diving (see weblinks right). You've easy access upto Lisbon city centre too via excellent public transport networks into the Sul Do Tejo area (weblinks right).
Sesimbra Guide, Cabo Espichel & Dinosaur Footprints
Sesimbra's Moorish castle high on the hill above the town looking out to sea contains today an 18th century Igreja Santa Maria do Castelo. Also inside there's an exhibition on the history of the castle.
Just a short bus or drive to the west of Sesimbra sits the wild cliffs of Cabo Espichel. There's dinosaur footprints embedded in the rocks around these parts near Lagosteiros Beach.
It's wild indeed down here, offering stunning cliff top walking. Cabo Espicfhel has been attracting pilgrims for years - there's a deserted 17th century convent (Nossa Senhora do Cabo) up here which is soon to be a pousada hotel. The Cabo Espichel festival takes place annually on the last Sunday of September. The Virgin is trooped upto the top of the cliffs a la old traditional religious procession.
Sesimbra Scuba Diving & Outdoor Activities
Sesimbra makes a superb beach base if you're looking for a good choice of boat trips, fishing trips, scuba diving and diving excursions. Sesimbra Marina (Clube Naval) offer a choice of boat trip cruises and fishing trips (weblink right).
