Inland Camacha is idyllically set just up from the Canico coast and the Palheiro Gardens. It's beautifully rural up here, and Camacha is surrounded by attractive woodland and cultivated hillside terraces. It's a good choice for walkers, but Camacha is also popular with daytrippers coming to buy and see made the wicker can baskets made up here, called barreleiros.
Camacha is also home to the famous Madeira folk sone and dance troup called Grupo Folclorico da Camacha.
Rural Camacha sits on a stunning Madeira plateau enveloped in woodland. It's a good base for walking, and famous for its wicker weaving. The Barreleiros wicker baskets have been made here for many years - they were used to carry around tools and clear away debris when the levadas water irrigating channels were being built. There are some choice Levadas in the Camacha area, with pathways alongside which are popular with walkers.
As well as the wicker baskets, cane furniture is made here and exported all over the world! It's the local willow trees that provide the raw material.
Craftsmen skilled in wicker basket making give regular displays in Camacha - well worth a look in O Relogio/The Clock or warehouse within the main Camacha square. A visit to the wicker making factory to buy and view is a popular Madeira excursion, and usually calling into Camacha is included in East Madeira island tours.
Camacha's other claim to fame is folk dance and song - Camacha is somewhat of a cultural centre within Madeira. The Grupo Folclorico da Camacha song and dance troupe are based here.
