Santa Cruz is a most attractive East Madeira coast base. It is close to the airport, but this doesn't distract too much from the attractions here in Santa Cruz. Crammed with chic cafes, bars and a selection of restaurants, plus a cultural centre well worth a look, Santa Cruz make as nice quiet Madeira base.
Two big attractions in and around Santa Cruz include the Lido and Santa Cruz Aquapark which has five fun toboggan rides, several fast slides and two great pools, with bar and food outlets on-site. Golf is also nearby at both Palheiro Golf and Campo de Golf near Santo da Serra.
Nifty little spot is Santa Cruz, with a pristine centre containing a number of striking historic buildings. The seafront promenade area is chic too - with its stylish mosaic patterns and shady palm trees. The seafront Lido is also a perfect swimming alternative to the pebbly beach here.
There's a chilled feel to Santa Cruz and the occasional airport noise doesn't really bother. Historical buildings here include Santa Cruz parish church dedicated to Sao Salvador - it dates from 1479 to 1533 and it's big. It was designed by Pedro Eanes who also designed Funchal's se/cathedral.
Other buildings of note include the ornate town hall with Gothic arches dating from around the same time as the church. Santa Cruz law courts on Rua da Ponta Nova date from the 19th century and follow a colonial style.
Handy nearby attractions near Santa Cruz include Madeira's only Aquapark, two Madeira golf courses and Funchal is but a short drive via the motorway.
