Madeira Story Centre, Rua D.Carlos I, no 28-29, 9060-051 Funchal. (see weblink right for more details).
Situated on the eastern side of Funchal centre, buildings here in the Old Quarter of Funchal date from the 16th century. It's one of Funchal's most attractive areas, adjacent to the fort and crammed with friendly restaurants, bars and cafes. It's also quite near Funchal's main bustling market - Mercado dos Lavradores.
Wander around the pedestrianised old cobbled streets here, and sample fresh fish in one of the many superb fish restaurants.
Just beyond the Old Quarter sits Fortaleza de Sao Tiago dating from 1637 and designed by the Portuguese Military Engineer Jeronimo Jorge. Its been painted a pretty yellow in recent years and the colour works.
Inside the fort you'll find some contemporary delights, including the Museum of Contemporary art with some rather interesting Portuguese paining dating from 1960 onwards - the contrast of old and contemporary makes a nice mix.
