One of Funchal's most exciting attractions in the eastern area of the town is the fantastic cable car ride or Telefericos up and inland to Monte, and the Monte Palace and Gardens. The cable car ride itself is an unmissible experience (if you can manage the height). Well worth it for the sublime views across Funchal, and up towards Monte.
Once at the top you've plenty to do including a visit to the Monte Palace and strolls around the beautiful tropical gardens up here! It's wonderfully peaceful.
The Telefericos da Madeira (cable car upto Monte) is one of Madeira's most popular attractions (expect some queues so get there early if you can!). If it took you lots of courage to head up to Monte in the cable car, then avoid it on the way down by hopping on one of the Monte toboggans down which takes about 20 minutes. The Monte toboggans back down to Funchal rank up there with the cable car as a major attraction. Great fun, you glide down pushed by usually two gondoliers dressed in white. Tip at the end! it's the best way to see Funchal, and during the cable car ride, which lasts around 15 minutes, you can expect panoramic views of Madeira's capital.
The difference in altitude from Funchal to Monte is 560m, and the cable car glids along at just 4m/s. It's a gentle ride and a highlight of Funchal indeed. Each cabin has just 7 seats. Check the Funchal Cable Car weblink right for more details.
