Still in the province of Santana, just to the south of Santana is Sao Roque do Faial, the starting point to numerous walks and trails inland towards some of Madeira's highest peaks, and the Parque Natural de Madeira.
When Portuguese discoverers first landed on Madeira in 1419 the island was densely carpeted in woodland, mostly ancient Lauriisilva forest. They cleared much of it, but around 20 percent of Madeira is still covered in Laurissilva. Some of the best of it is to the north of the island around Madeira Natural Park, and easily accessible from Sao Roque do Faial.
