Santana toward the north east of Madeira is situated on the hillside and is a most attractive village with distinctive palheiros cottages - essentially triangular shaped cottages with pretty thatched roofs that reach to the ground. Grain used to be stored in the upper floors.
Madeira folk dancing is renowned here - visit Santana holds a regional folk dancing festival in early September annually. Santana is also a hotspot base for walking holidays on Madeira, with a choice of stunning rambles and Levada walks branching out from the village and easy access to Parque Natural da Madeira and the rare laurissilva forests here on Madeira.
Walking holidays and exploring the Laurissilva Forests around Parque Florestal das Queimadas are on the menu if you base yourself in Santana. A choice of challenging and easier trails push out from the village of Santana including the popular 3 mile walk through Pico das Pedras National Park. Striking revines is the area include the Ribeira dos Cedros and Ribeira da Fonte do Louro. (see the Madeira Tourism weblink right for details).
The area around Santana is particularly fertile, and wheat, maize and rye all used for Madeira wine are grown in the region.

The Madeira Theme Park in Santana is one of Madeira's most popular attractions. It's a huge entertainment village this attraction, with four multimedia pavilions, showing films tracing the history of Madeira, the landscapes of Madeira and more.
Other attractions include a maz, a huge boating lake, gardens with local Madeira flora, lots of footpaths and trails, a kids playground and restaurants and cafes on-site. You'll need a full day here to cover everything. Madeira's theme park is one if not the top Madeira family holiday attraction alongside the nearby waterpark near Santa Cruz.
