Calheta on the Madeira south west coastline is actually the main centre for banana plantations in Madeira. You will spot them as you drive in. Vineyards and sugar cane production is also here. This now popular Madeira low key seaside resort is an ancient parish on the island. Look in on the stunning parish church. Inside is an amazing alfarge geometrical patterned ceiling. Arco da Calheta church dates from the 18th century, although you will note some original Manueline features including the Mudejar roof.

Paul do Mar particularly is a Madeira surfing hotspots, and there are a scattering of surf schools/shops here. Calheta has two glorious white sandy beach bays, whilst Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar have pebble beaches.
