Calheta is one of Madeira's best beach holiday spots. With Madeira Island's rocky coast, it's rare to find sandy beaches here, but the secret is out, superb family holiday hotspot Calheta has two sandy beach bays.
Calheta's popularity is growing! Its excellent beach facilities and Madeira resort amenities combine with the new and developing Centro de Artes das Mudas cultural centre here. Superb art exhibitions are held here. Calheta also has a little marina offering a choice of waterrsports activities including yachting and boat trips. Local shops are good, and volleyball is popular on the beach. Calheta is a good choice for a couples beach holiday or low key family holiday resort. It's within easy reach of Funchal too.
Calheta Madeira South West Coast Holidays
Calheta on the Madeira south west coastline is actually the main centre for banana plantations in Madeira. You will spot them as you drive in. Vineyards and sugar cane production is also here. This now popular Madeira low key seaside resort is an ancient parish on the island. Look in on the stunning parish church. Inside is an amazing alfarge geometrical patterned ceiling. Arco da Calheta church dates from the 18th century, although you will note some original Manueline features including the Mudejar roof.
Calheta has a beautiful seafront has seen much renovation in recent years, and includes a new marina. Watersports are popular here, and also further up the coast at Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar surfing holidays Madeira style are on the menu.
Paul do Mar particularly is a Madeira surfing hotspots, and there are a scattering of surf schools/shops here. Calheta has two glorious white sandy beach bays, whilst Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar have pebble beaches.
