Camara De Lobos sits just to the west of Funchal on the coast, and is essentially Funchal's quieter neighbour. Camara De Lobos is a particularly pretty fishing village, enhanced by the dramatic rock formation and cliff coast nearby at Cabo Girao (Cabo Girao is the second highest cliff in the world!).

If you're looking for a tranquil Madeira base, with a real work a day feel, then Camara De Lobos is a good choice. It's a pretty fishing village with a pebble beach and bustling boatyard.
Camara De Lobos attracts day trippers coming in for a look at the giant Cabo Girao cliff nearby. Its been quite well known though as a Madeira fishing village since Winston Churchill visited the village in 1950, and apparently did some painting here. (the terrace behind the boatyards was his favoured painting spot)
Just off the main Camara De Lobs square there's a choice of restaurants. The old Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao church here in Camara De Lobs dates from around 142 - it's one of the oldest religious buildings on Madeira.
The dramatic natural phenomena of the Cabo Giao cliff which plunges into the sea near Camara De Lobos is the second highest cliff in the world - the highest is in Norway.
Reaching heights of 580m/1900ft, Cabo Girao is an amazing sight and a look at this cliff on Madeira should be on every visitors itinerary.
The odd wreck has been smashed against this cliff. View it from the path at the cliff base, or drive upto the top for spectacular views.
