Nelas is a pleasant little town on the north western side of the Serra da Estrela mountain range, the highest point on mainland Portugal. It's a great base from which to explore the mountain region nearby.
Nelas is most notable for its palaces, the majority of which date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The town is also famous for its red and white Dao wines and creamy Serra cheeses.
Nelas' Tourist Information Office is on Largo Prof Dr. Jose Veiga Simao, 3520-103 Nelas. Tel: 351 32 944 348. Email: infoturismo@rtdaolafoes.com
One thing Nelas knows how to put on is a carnival. The Canas de Senhorim Carnival originated from rival neighbourhoods being set up and the different classes confronting each other in a relatively harmless way during a carnival.
This tradition carries on today where two carnival marches meet in the town on Shrove Tuesday at which point they try to outdo each other with dancing and singing contests.
There are several events around the carnival. Check out the link opposite for more information.
Near Nelas is the 18th century hot springs of Felgueira whose sulphuric waters are thought to be healing for diseases of the respiratory system, rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. These continue to offer a wide range of treatments today in a gorgeous setting with the Serra da Estrela mountain range in the background and the peaceful River Mondego closeby.

Nelas is also home to some of the vineyards whose grapes go towards making Dao Wine. This area is sheltered between the Serra do Caramulo and Serra da Estrela mountains.
Take a tour through the area and visit the various quintas where you can taste the wines before purchasing.
