Oliveira de Azemeis is a small city north east of Aveiro and south of Porto.
It is well placed for exploring the central region of Portugal as well as Porto and the Douro, as well as the Costa de Prata and the Costa Verde at only 20 kilometres from the coast.
Oliveria de Azemeis is a successful modern city that still retains some of it's older streets. Historic monuments include several chapels and churches including the 18th century Igreja Matriz, the neo-gothic Capela da Nossa Senhora de La Salette and the former Benedictine monastery, Mosteiro de Cucujaes that ranges from 17th-19th century architecture.
The older parts are characterised by "casas de brasileiro", Brazilian houses. These were built at the end of the 19th century and were built by Portuguese who had emigrated to Brazil to make their fortune then on returning to their home country brought their wealth with them financing business in the area.
The countryside around the city is largely made up of agricultural fields and woodlands. The area is criss-crossed with streams on which water-mills are dotted throughout the landscape,such as at Ul where flour for the famous Ul bread is ground.
The area is also famous for its scarecrow Exhibition in Macinhata da Seixa. This has grown and grown and in the year 2000 over a thousand scarecrows displayed their scarecrows ensuring their place in the Guinness Book of Records! The

The Ferreira de Castro Museum is a reproduction of the writer's life and works in which he described the lives of the emigrant Portuguese who went to Brazil to make their fortunes and the Amazon Forest.

There is also a Regional Museum that details early 20th century middle class life and exhibits archaeological finds from the area and glass and pottery that used to be made in the city.
