Curia, twenty kilometres from Coimbra, is located in the heart of the Bairrada wine region and is famed for the healing properties of its thermal waters discovered by the Romans.
The town's heyday was frm the late nineteenth century through to the roaring twenties and much of the architecture harks back to that time with examples of buildings from La Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau architecture throughout the town.
Curia is famed for its healing spa which has been known since Roman times as Aquae Curvia.
Curia carries on the tradition of spa town today as a modern health resort offering treatments for a range of ailments such as renal disorders, rheumatism and muscular-skeletal illnesses.
Many of the hotels were founded on the attraction of the thermal spas to visitors from all over Portugal. So popular were they that some of the hotels have a rather palacial appearance such as the Grande Hotel da Curia and the Curia Palace Hotel with its magnificant garden.
Everything in Curia seems to be designed for relaxation and healing with a green leafy park to wander around and a lake to paddle about on.
Curia has a new golf course at Curia Golf Club. This is a challenging 34 par nine hole golf course covering 20 acres on the left bank of the Crtima river.

The Bairrada Wine Route, Rota dos Vinhos da Bairrada, takes you through the countryside dotted with vineyards so you can see the wine being produced first hand. The first route takes you through the Dao region taking in Viseu with its rich architectural heritage. The Baga casta grape is the most widely grown grape in this area. The countryside becomes more lush between the River Dao and River Mondego where vineyards are associated with manor houses and stately homes. Along the way you can take in spectacular views of the Serra do Caramulo and its famous forest.
The second route of the Bairrada Wine Route takes you through the Bairrada wine region. Here it is said that the influence of the sea has a lot to do with the character of the wines of this region. This is the route that brings you through the spa towns of Luso and Curia.
