Sao Pedro do Sul is set in the heart of central Portugal countryside near the Serra do Caramulo mountain range.
It is one of the many spa towns of Central Portugal and much of its attraction is health and wellbeing - be it from therapeutic spas or enjoying the wild outdoors.
Set in wooded countryside Sao Pedro do Sul makes a great base for exploring the countryside north of Coimbra. The Caramulo hills clothed in oak and chestnut forests are renowned for the spring water that originates from here. Fantastic views can be had from the viewpoint at 1,074 metres. This is historic countryside with Roman paths leading you past ancient dolmens and menhirs. The rivers around the area are popular for whitewater rafting and kayaking.
The town council has identified several themed walks and there are downloadable leaflets - link right. Unfortunately these are only in Portuguese but they do have maps from which you can plan your own walks. There are also themed several tourist circuits around area - link right.
The first king of Portugal, Dom Afonso Henriques, is reputed to have bathed in the spas at Sao Pedro do Sul to gather his strength before setting out to conquer the Moors.
