North Portugal Tourism Guide - Porto Airport

Porto Airport or OPO Airport and more formally Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport, is now a modern light and airy airport servicing the northern Iberian Peninsular. It's easy to find just off the main motorway network with the Porto metro linking it directly to Porto City Centre. Regular buses also come and go from different destinations across the region.

There is a good choice of different shops, restaurants and cafes/bars. Most are open between 7 am and 11 pm but some are open between 5 am and midnight.

Porto Airport - Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport

Porto has an international, award-winning airport, Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport that lies 12 miles north of Porto city itself. It is also known as OPO or Oporto Airport. It is strategically placed to serve as a primary travel hub for the north western corner of the Iberian Peninsular. It is easily located just off the main motorway and is well signposted. Scheduled flights to and from Porto to the UK and Ireland are currently Dublin, Liverpool, London Heathrow and London Stansted. Internal flights to Lisbon are also scheduled as well as a range of European and international destinations.

The airport has a restaurant, a self-service restaurant and four cafes/snack bars. There are also a wide range of shops selling books and magazines, food, fashion and jewellery items, gift shops with Portuguese specialities and what used to be Duty Free goods. For those with mobility problems the airport has several lifts and dedicated toilet facilities. You can also arrange for CIP passenger assistance both to and from the aircraft as well as the use of the Lounge and other facilities.

Public Transport at Oporto Airport, Portugal

The airport has excellent public transport links to help you get in and out of the airport quickly.

If you're travelling by car the airport is clearly signposted from A28/IC1 motorway, the main route north and south of Porto, and is just off highway NC107 and secondary road IC24.

Porto Metro from Oporto Airport

Line E, the Violet Line (Linhe Violeta), of the Metro services the airport from Estadio do Dragao in the north east of Porto city centre and near FC Porto's football stadium.

From Estadio do Dragao the Metro connects to all other stations on the Metro network. It also stops at Campanha rail station. The journey from the airport to the city centre takes just 25 minutes.

The airport station is located just in front of the arrivals zone of the Airport and is reached through an underground walkway. The way to the Metro station is signposted throughout the airport. When arriving at the airport station on the Metro, you will only need to go down a floor and walk around 50 meters before reaching the inside of the Airport.

Buses from Porto Airport

There is an airport shuttle bus that leaves the airport for Porto every 15 minutes from near the taxi rank just outside the airport. It takes about thirty minutes to get into Porto ending on Avenida dos Aliados in the centre of Porto.

Buses numbers 601 and 87 stop at the Airport and take you into various parts of Porto city.

Transportes Resende bus number 120 runs a service between the airport and the following places: Santa Cruz (near the church), Leca (near the church), Matosinhos (near the market), Guifoes (near the church) and Custoias, approximately every 20 or 30 minutes until 19.40, or night service until 21.25 or 23.00. Operating times on Sundays are from 7.30 to 19.30.

Taxis

Taxis are available from the airport and are equipped with a meter on which the fares are displayed. During Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and on all other days from 9.00 pm at night until 6.00 am in the morning, a surcharge of 20% is automatically added to the fare on the meter.

As a general guide, the price on the meter corresponds to the number of kilometres travelled between the pick-up point and the destination, multiplied by 0.74 Euros, or in the event of a round trip fare, the rate would be multiplied by 0.37 Euros, except in those periods subject to the above-mentioned 20% surcharge.

Any toll road charges are paid by the customer. The rate for a taxi that has been called via radio taxi or phone will be subject to a surcharge of 0.80 Euros. Baggage that exceeds the special dimensions of 55 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm may also be subject to a surcharge of 1.60 Euros.

The transportation of cradles, prams/strollers, and wheelchairs is free of charge and tipping is at the customer's discretion. Prices quoted are for a maximum of 4 passengers. All taxis of standard colour are obliged to display a rate table on the window of the rear left-side door. Cabs must issue a receipt to all passengers. Should you wish to lodge a complaint for any reason, the customer should show the receipt to one of the following police authorities: the PSP (Polcia de Seguranca Publica), the GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) or the Inspector-General for Commercial Activities (Servicos da Inspeccao-Geral das Actividades Econmicas).

Car hire is available from Oporto Airport from a variety of companies. Their offices are all close to each other on the Porto airport complex and open from 6 am to midnight. Baggage Top Tips

If you have any problems with lost luggage or damaged luggage report it immediately to the baggage company. They will log the problem and give you a reference number, don't leave the airport until it's logged with them. They will then deal with the issue accordingly.
