The estuary territory around the Alvor Algarve coast to the east of Lagos Bay is a gentle contrast to the jagged rock formations further west around Lagos. Fishing has long thrived here in these tidal estuary waters. Visit the fish market at Alvor's little harbour. Development is still low key here, and Alvor has a superb choice of local golf courses and pretty long sandy beach surrounded by a scattering of smaller beach coves.

This quieter, and more luxurious spot east of bustling Praia da Rocha beach is developing a reputation for luxury spa and golf resort holidays. There's a choice of luxury golf courses near Alvor. Hotel development has been creeping round the coast though from Portimao. Alvor however remains the territory of luxury Algarve villas and quality hotels.
