Just 24km north and inland from Portimao sits the rural natural spa retreat of Caldas de Monchique and the village of Monchique high in the Serra De Monchique mountains. The landscape is simply stunning up here, and around the spa village of Caldas de Monchique there are numerous walking trails. Caldas de Monchique has a history as a spa retreat - natural spa waters bubble up here. They bottle it now as well. The sublime woodlands of the Serra De Monchique are a mix of sweet chestnut, cork oak and arbutus as well as mimosa, pine and eucalyptus. The air is crystal clear up here and it smells beautiful!
Well worth a detour up from the hustle and bustle of Praia da Rocha and Portimao to the peace and tranquility here. Outdoor activity companies like Alternativtour (weblink right) offer numerous activities such as mountaineering, biking and treking. The Serra de Monchique reaches hieghts of 902 metres around the Foia area. The whole area, with its volcanic origins, is akin to a huge botanic garden, and the natural water springs and pretty Caldas de Monchique have been enjoyed for their therapeutic qualities as far back as Roman Times.
Caldas de Monchique high in the Serra de Monchique mountains of inland West Algarve is well worth a detour day trip. This luxury spa retreat has natural watersprings and has been a fashionalbe bourgeois spa retreat for many years - the Romans came first around 2000 years ago.
It's a stunning inland Algarve location for walking along one of the many footpaths through the forests here. Alternatively, look around the arts and crafts centres or relax outside at one of the cafes or luxury restaurants here.

Well worth a visit to the town of Monchique too with its pretty main square, numerous cafes and arts and crafts shops as well as a 16th century church. Many of the restaurants here offer the renowned flavoured piri-piri chicken.
