Algarve West Tourism Guide - Lagoa
Lagoa, just inland up from pretty Carvoeiro its coastal neighbour, is renowned as the Algarve's hub for wine production. The Adega Co-operativa still operates and can be found on the Portimao road. Visit for tours in the summer only.
Base yourself in Lagoa for a more everyday Portuguese feel if your preference is to be away from the Algarve holiday crowds. You've easy access north inland to historic Silves and beyond the stunning Monchique mountain area for walking, and you're within easy reach of pretty Carvoeiro, the Algar Seco dramatic rocky coast and fishing village Ferragudo.
Lagoa Algarve Guide
Closely connected to Silves historically, Lagoa was fortified under the Moors from the 8th Century under the control of their Algarve capital Silves.
Lagoa's agricultural importance as a hub not just for vineyards and wine, but also for beans, vegetables and carob has declined somewhat in recent years, but the Co-operativa de Lagoa offers still a choice of full bodied and light red wines. It produces its own sugar cane spirit or aguardente.

Estombar near Lagoa, Algarve Portugal History
Estombar near Lagoa is a popular historic location, the site of a once bustling salt trade. There's much to see in Estombar. Visit the historic Igreja Sao Tiago (St James) church with its delightful rocaille style, plus a Manueline doorway.
The church dates from the 16th century, with extensive rebuilding undertaken in the 18th century. This church at Estombar is particularly special for its surviving two columns from the original Manueline building here. Note also the azulejos tiles depicting old St James in battle with the Moors.
